Local body staffers demand local election at the soonest

Various trade union leaders from the Local Body Employee Association, Nepal have urged the government to announce the local elections. During a meeting with Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Hitraj Pandey on Monday, they also demanded that no delay be made in announcing the date for local election. "It's been over 15 years since the local bodies are without poeple's representatives. Due to the failure to hold the local election, service delivery by the local bodies and local development work have been affected,” reads the memorandum signed by Harikumar Shrestha, the association's chairman.

They have submitted a 15-point memorandum demanding timely local election.  The memorandum states that the number of local bodies have already been fixed so the government's focus now should be on holding the local election. They also demanded that about 6,000 staffers who have been working in local bodies for the past 20 years on contract basis should be recruited as permanent staffs. “For ensuring their (bodies' staffers) social security they should be provided health insurance, uniform allowances, scholarships for their children and so on,” reads the memorandum further. They further demanded that the government should build a hospital for them.

Parties have no alternatives to consensus: Koirala

Nepali Congress General Secretary, Dr Shashank Koirala, said the parties do not have any option but to reach a consensus on implementing the constitution.  Speaking at a program held on the occasion of Martyrs' Day on Sunday by Nepali Congress Gaindakot Town Committee here, Koirala expressed concern that the country was still unable to move forward on path of implementing the constitution. He stressed on need for consensus among all the parties before seeking an outlet from the present crisis.

Koirala underlined unity among three major parties as today's necessity for constitution implementation as they had united when promulgating the constitution. He said the main opposition party – CPN (UML) – should be taken onboard the constitution implementation process. Koirala, who is a lawmaker from Nawalparasi constituency – 1, said the country would find a solution only after treading the path shown by the martyrs.

UML trying to create rift between hills and Tarai: Deuba

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has accused the main Opposition, the CPN-UML, of trying to create rift between the hill and Madhes communities. “The government has registered a constitution amendment bill in parliament to establish peace in Tarai-Madhes. But the UML has been obstructing the House in protest of the bill. The UML is thus trying to create a rift between the hills and the Tarai,” said Deuba. Speaking at a national gathering of Treasurers of NC in the capital on Friday, Deuba said that by obstructing the House, the UML was expressing its anger for having to quit government. “Parties form and leave government in a democracy. It is a normal process. It is not appropriate to hold the House a hostage just because you (UML) have to leave the government,” he said. Deuba also claimed that UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli had already given his nod to the kind of constitution amendment bill registered by the government. “But now he is obstructing the b...
